Authorities in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has surfaced on a isolated coast, with some scientists worried it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.

Widespread Appearance Across Shore

The rosy-colored ooze was found on a section of a coastal area about 37 miles south of the city. A like substance has also been noted on sections of Little Roaring Beach and an additional coastal site.

Specimens have been collected and provided to the regulatory body for analysis. A spokesperson stated that "algae outbreaks are a normal phenomenon in reaction to variations in food sources, heat, rainfall or sunlight".

Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that normally act as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a proliferation, there is a quick expansion in their numbers that disturbs the normal functioning of ecosystems.

These events have been likened to subsurface wildfires and can continue to grow as long as the environment is suitable. In more extreme scenarios, delicate ocean habitats can be wiped out as aquatic animals is eliminated or suffocated, supplying more minerals for the proliferation.

Past Devastating Outbreak in another region

South Australia in the past dealt with a devastating phytoplankton proliferation along its southern shore after a succession of marine heatwaves, which spread across an extensive zone. The expert said sea sparkle did not create poisons similar to the species involved in the previous harmful algal bloom, but it does eat tiny creatures and "many fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were in greatest danger.

"Typically one notices a bloom of sea sparkle after a proliferation of another organism, or an event such as a salmon or coral spawning event," she added.

Demands for Response and Public Safety

Lilly Henley, who gathered specimens of the magenta ooze in the state, said it seemed the potential proliferation had "expanded greatly" and suggested the fish farming business was the most likely culprit, pointing to like situations overseas.

"So Tasmania needs to deliver a strong warning here, the officials and the EPA need to respond to this. We need to analyse the samples we've collected and we need to inform the people here," she stated.

The scientist stated she had concerns for public safety after feeling a tingling sensation along her limbs and skin while being exposed with affected seawater.
